Volkswagen Scirocco in action  :coolspeak:

The Scirocco has definitely taken the spotlight these couple of weeks after conflicting statements from Michigan and Wolfsburg were reported. In any case, it now seems the fate of the Scirocco, though still unofficial, is safe in the US. So, to celebrate, here's a video of the Scirocco in action, doing some random stuff on the skid pad at Volkswagen's Ehra-Lessien test track. It's nothing we've seen before and don't worry, it has none of that bad music either, which means we hear that TSI engine and exhaust in all of it's glory.

New VW TSI Engine and 7-Speed DSG

Market launch second half 2007
Volkswagen is continuing its drive train offensive. At the International Vienna Engine Symposium (26 - 27 April), Europe's largest car maker presented its new TSI petrol engine (90 kW / 122 PS) and the world's first seven-speed dual clutch gearbox (DSG) for the compact and mid-class. Both products are scheduled for market launch in the second half of the year.

TSI stands for maximum power coupled with minimum consumption by combining direct injection and turbo-charging with reduced engine capacity. The award-winning TSI engines with a power output of 103 kW and 125 kW are popular choices, for example for the Golf and Touran. The new 90 kW TSI will be the third option in the TSI engine line-up.

With 200 Newton metres of torque at 1,500 rpm, the torque of the current 1.4-liter turbo engine is almost 30 percent higher than the torque of the 1.6 FSI engine. The TSI has low-end torque gains of up to 66 percent. In spite of the improved performance and torque characteristics, consumption has been reduced by approximately six percent. Technically, the new TSI is based on its compressor counterparts with 103 and 125 kW. In contrast to twin-charged engines, the "small" 90 kW TSI uses just the turbo-charger for boost - an additional compressor is not required.

World's first seven-speed DSG gearbox for volume models
A further innovation is the seven-speed DSG gearbox. In contrast to the six-speed DSG gearbox, the clutches of the new gearbox do not run in an oil bath. This further improves efficiency. Volkswagen's six-speed DSG gearbox gave automatics sensationally low consumption figures. Thanks to this efficiency and sporty shifting characteristics, the DSG provoked a boom in the popularity of DSG gearboxes in the compact and mid-class. For example, the DSG is ordered in 25 percent of Tourans today. The new seven-speed DSG gearbox has added an attractive option to the Volkswagen range. It will be available for vehicles from the Polo to the Passat. The transferable maximum torque is equivalent to a maximum of 250 Newton metres.

The combination of the two new products results in excellent consumption figures and convenience, comfort and driving enjoyment. In the Golf, it has a fuel consumption of just 5.9 l/100 km. Both the seven-speed DSG gearbox and the 90 kW TSI show once again that Volkswagen makes highly innovative technology available to all drivers.

VW Golf GTI W12 Concept: 650Hp & 325km/h ! Un R32 si 36 killer si ce mai vreti voi  :D

Looks like the VW GTI meeting Wörthersee 2007 is turning into a major event this year as, apart from the impressive Audi TT clubsport quattro VW presented the "King" of all GTI’s: the Golf GTI W12 Concept. Fitted with a mid-mounted 6.0-liter 12cylinder bi-turbo engine pumping 650Hp @ 6.000 rpm and a maximum torque of 750Nm @ 4.500 rpm., the Golf GTI W12 sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62mph) in just 3,7 sec while achieving a top speed of 325km/h (202 mph). Despite the extensive modifications that include a lower and broader body than the stock GTI, the addition of several air vents to cool the massive engine and the specially designed roof that plays the role of a diffuser/ spoiler, VW’s concept retains the GTI’s silhouette. However, unlike VW Group's other concept, the TT speedster, the W12 has infinitesimal chances of going into production.

VW planuieste sa ofere variante hibride pentru fiecare model din gama, proiect ce va fi demarat in maxim 2 ani  ;)

Volkswagen now plans to hybridize every model

It seems Martin Winterkorn is now taking back his initial statements regarding the place of hybrid technology in Volkswagen's future and is now confirming that Volkswagen is planning on offering a hybrid version for every model, a project that should begin in two years' time.

The article in Germany's Auto Bild newspaper, which conducted the interview with the Volkswagen chief, stated that although no decision has been made on what electric components will be used for which model, the plan is to have both a micro-hybrid system that uses brake regeneration to charge the batteries and a full hybrid solution. According to Winterkorn, Volkswagen is currently working on a small hybrid that can be launched into the market "fairly quickly".

What caused Winterkorn's sudden change of heart? Only five months ago, Winterkorn had dismissed hybrid technology to be too costly for the consumer and, therefore, not worth the investment. Five months later, he's making official statements that every Volkswagen model will have a hybrid version. It may have something to do with Porsche. Porsche executive Bernd Harling has recently said in an interview that "Volkswagen is the key" in making hybrid technology possible for Porsche. Porsche's new-found interest in hybrid technology combined with a controlling stake in Volkswagen means that Volkswagen will be in the hybrid game, whether they like it or not. This may also be another plan of Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking to help Volkswagen attack Toyota efficiency.

Alte detalii privind generatia a doua a DSG-ului  ;)

         Seven-Speed DSG Gearbox Breaks Cover

Volkswagen has developed an evolution of its pioneering DSG gearbox. The new seven-speed system – a world first and codenamed DQ200 – uses a pair of dry clutches in preference to the six-speed version’s twin wet clutches. This increases efficiency and performance over the wet clutch six-speed system.

The six-speed DSG gearbox, which was introduced in 2003, uses a pair of clutches submerged in oil. The new seven-speed gearbox adopts a pair of dry, organic bonded friction linings that do not require cooling, making the drivetrain more efficient through the extra ratio and the fact that less power is required for the gear selection and clutch servo system.

For the first time the DSG gearbox has been mounted transversely. Measuring only 369 mm in length and weighing only 79 kg including the dual-mass flywheel the gearbox is remarkably compact. These modest proportions mean it can be applied to models from the Polo right up to the Passat and, in its current form, it is capable of coping with power outputs of up to 170 PS and 184 lbs ft of torque.

In adopting seven-speeds, Volkswagen engineers were able to lower first gear to improve acceleration from a standstill. By contrast seventh gear has been raised to act as an overdrive function making it ideal for motorway driving with the additional effect of raising economy and comfort levels.

The volume of oil contained within the gearbox has also been reduced by 75 per cent. The oil circuits are split into two in an effort to protect the lubrication’s purity. As with a conventional manual gearbox, one of the circuits is used for cooling and lubrication of the gear teeth, the second feeds oil to the gear actuators. Since the clutch does not require cooling the quantity of oil was reduced from seven litres in the six-speed DSG gearbox to only 1.7-litres in the new seven-speed system.

Production of the gearbox is set to start at the end of the year with its first application in the UK being planned for the Golf and mated to the 1.4-litre TSI petrol and 1.9-litre TDI diesel engines.

Primele spy-shots cu noul baby-suv Tiguan de VW !

      New VW Tiguan: First Details

Acceptance Drive in Namibia

Trial Phase completed with a last hard test

Tiguan comes with a completely new generation radio and navigation system

The first SUV worldwide with Park Assist

Offroad Mode activates an armada of assistance systems at the touch of a switch Chassis layout enables high reserves of agility and safety

Volkswagen will complete the development phase of the new Tiguan with a final extreme test in Namibia. During the final acceptance drive on the African continent, the electronic components and chassis of the new SUV are the primary focus of testing. Considering the electronics, a technical highlight on board the Tiguan is of special interest for the testers: the completely new generation radio and navigation system. This was developed in close cooperation with the most important local Volkswagen operations in Europe, Asia and America. Worldwide development collaboration made it possible for a wider than ever pool of specialized know-how, and also the requirements of all markets, to influence the devices. The top system of the new line, with the designation RNS 510, has a 30 GB hard disk and is controlled with a touch screen. A rear-view camera enables a view behind in this case.

Completely new electronic systems also simplify offroad driving in the Tiguan. The particularly agile and dynamic SUV uses an innovative network of assistance systems with the name of “Offroad Mode”. Just on touch of a switch activates a whole armada of safety features, supporting the driver in a multitude of situations.

THE TIGUAN VERSIONS

Innovation: All engines of the Tiguan are charged.

18 and 28 degrees: Two front ends with different entry angles.

Five motors.

All of the engine and body versions of the Tiguan have to “swallow” the dust of Namibia in this final test. Volkswagen will be offering the SUV – and this is unique so far – exclusively with charged engines. The TSIs (gasoline) output 110 kW / 150 PS, 125 kW / 170 and 147 kW / 200 PS; and the TDIs (diesel) develop 103 kW / 140 PS and 125 kW / 170 PS.

Two front ends. The two body variants of the Tiguan differ primarily in their front ends. The “Trend & Fun” and “Sport & Style” versions are designed for a maximum entry angle of 18 degrees in front. The “Track & Field” Tiguan that is tuned even more for offroad duty can assume entry angles of up to 28 degrees with its front end.

During the testing program in Africa, as however already mentioned, the emphasis is less on engines and entry angles than  on final checking of the electronics and chassis.

THE TIGUAN CHASSIS

Front axle: McPherson system with aluminum support frame.

Rear axle: Innovative four-link rear axle is ideally matched to the four-wheel drive system 4MOTION.

Long before the first prototype was built, it had been decided that the new Tiguan should be an extremely actively driving and safe SUV. The development team pulled out all the stops to achieve this goal. The Tiguan now has to demonstrate in Africa that it achieves neutral to lightly understeering handling and an unusually low roll angle. Furthermore, the road holes along the edge of the Namib Desert should once more test how well the highly dynamic driving characteristics and excellent ride comfort interact under the hardest conditions. Because the demands on the car were clearly stated in the specification: to set benchmarks in dynamics, comfort and active safety. These goals were foremost in chassis development:

Agile driving behavior

Very good vibration behavior and ride comfort

Low roll angle with harmonic roll dynamics

High driving dynamic stability

Good Offroad handling

Front axle. The demands are achieved with a chassis layout that sets standards in this class: at the front end, the Tiguan has a McPherson axle specially optimized for the SUV with lower A-arm steering linkage and the wheels hung from damper struts. The axle is located with a one-piece aluminum sub frame.

Rear axle. The four-link rear axle has also been adapted to best suit the permanent four-wheel drive system 4MOTION. The four-link rear axle of the Tiguan is specially intended for this combination. The extremely robust, but at the same time dynamically laid out axle geometry has already proved itself in the Passat 4MOTION. However, to cope with the stresses of offroad driving, the Tiguan has an entirely newly developed and weight-optimized high-strength steel sub frame instead of the equivalent aluminum component.

The rear axle of the front-wheel drive Tiguan has been modified correspondingly. Items no longer found on board include: Cardan shaft, rear final drive and drive shafts. But the sub frame is utilized in both drive variants. The innovative modular system of this rear axle has a decidedly positive effect on costs.

For the rear axle, newly developed shock absorbers were developed with increased oil volume; a favorable temperature level makes the absorbers well equipped for even the toughest offroad use. Like the front damper struts, also newly developed, both components provide for exceptionally good ride comfort properties.

A new generation of steering. A technological highlight in the indirect chassis area is the completely new generation of electromechanical power steering. A decisive advantage of the system: Despite the very precise steering feeling, even in offroad operation no jolts whatsoever are transmitted to the steering wheel. Primarily responsible for this is a newly constructed steering gear.

Wheels and tires. Providing contact to the road or trail on the base versions of the Tiguan are 16-inch wheels with 215/65 R16 tires. The “Sport & Style” Tiguan also has as standard 17-inch alloy wheels and 235/55 R17 tires. 18-inch wheels with tires in 235/50 R18 format are available as special equipment.

TIGUAN ELECTRONICS

Innovation: First Volkswagen with a new generation radio and navigation system.

Safety at the press of a button: offroad switch activates network of assistance systems.

Also in the area of electronics, the Tiguan was designed to set new standards in the compact SUV class. Typical of Volkswagen is the high standard it sets for making the interface to the driver as comfortable as possible. An example of this on the Tiguan is a newly designed radio and navigation system generation. The software and hardware of this new system fulfill the highest demands for operation, sound and the multitude of functions offered.

The RNS 510. A glance at the top device – a radio navigation system with the designation RNS 510, emphasizes this impressively. The RNS 510 is controlled using fixed menu buttons, two knobs and a touch screen for the numerous information, entertainment and system functions. In this case a rear-view camera eases the view behind, a standard fitting.

The hardware of the RNS 510 includes a 6.5” wide VGA color display with 800 X 480 pixels and outstanding brilliance. A power PC processor with 400 MHz and its own graphic processor enable fast computing. The navigation and entertainment data are saved on a 30 GB hard disk. It is also possible to incorporate accessories into the RNS 510 like the telephone control, an iPod and other MP3 players. Combination with a Dynaudio sound system is also possible.

Offroad navigation. A further innovation of the RNS 510 is a specially developed offroad navigation system. This mode makes it possible to record up to 500 route points during a journey, even in non-digitized areas. This allows the driver to find his or her way back from offroad adventures into any desert or steppe. In edit mode, the driver can modify the route as desired. A glance at the map in the RNS 510 display offers the required orientation.

Park Assist. The further countless high-end technologies on board the Tiguan include the world’s first park steering assistant to be installed in a SUV. This is called Park Assist and enables automatic steering into a parking space.

Offroad Mode. The core capability of a SUV – offroad function – will also be dealt with and perfected electronically in the new Tiguan. And this through just one switch, which activates the Offroad Mode. This will be offered exclusively on the Tiguan “Track & Field” and will improve offroad vehicle handling significantly. The initial idea behind the “Offroad Mode” was that all key offroad support functions should be activated by a central user control. Specifically, one switch activates the “hill descent assistant” (for optimal control on slopes), “adaptation of driver’s pedal characteristic” (for finer gradations of torque), “EDS adaptation” (electronic differential locks are activated at the slightest slip), “ABS adaptation” (improved braking action on loose road materials), “hill climb assist” (support when climbing and protection of the clutch) and – in conjunction with automatic transmission – “gear preselect” (including optimal engine braking action). These numerous functions involve up to five ECUs that manage the systems.

The pushbutton itself is connected to the engine controller. From there, the information “Offroad Mode active” is communicated to other ECUs via the vehicle’s CAN bus. For safety reasons, the function has to be reactivated after each ignition cycle.

Just how “intelligently” the electronics react is demonstrated by considering an offroad driving situation that is not all that uncommon: An engine stall can even happen to professional drivers offroad. This deactivates the Offroad Mode, and assistance systems are turned off. But the electronics of the Tiguan detects this as a “stall” and when the engine is restarted all offroad assistance systems are up and running again immediately.

MT gets hold of first Mk. VI Golf spyshot

Just yesterday, we reported some new details about the upcoming Mk. VI Golf and included two renderings of what the new Golf could possibly look like. It now looks like those renderings are spot on, at least for the rear.

Motor Trend magazine has acquired a spyshot of what looks to be like the Mk. VI. Actually, there's no mistaking it for another car due to that unique C-pillar that is signature Golf. What really caches the eye though are the redesigned taillights, shaped exactly like the photo rendering from yesterday. Other than the taillights, nothing looks different. MT do not have photos of the front, though if they exist, I'm sure they should be surfacing in the web anytime now. MT does suggest that the front will, contrary to the photo rendering, have a narrow, four bar grille.

MT also gives some insight as to what becomes of the Mk. V Golf in North America. They say that we probably won't be getting the Mk. VI until 2012 but that the Mk. V should be getting a facelift shortly after the Mk. VI hits European streets. Given the fact that the Mk. V and Mk. VI are practically identical technically speaking, this isn't really much of a loss. Although the lower production costs and shorter times that the Mk. VI is suppose to bring to the table probably won't be realized in the facelifted Mk. V.

It would be interesting to see what happens to the GTI, as well. Since the North American spec GTI is made in Germany, when the Mk. VI comes around, wouldn't the North American GTIs then technically be a Mk. VI?

Se pare ca VW planuieste constructia unei fabrici in State

Volkswagen considers a US plant following weak US Dollar

The last time Volkswagen had a production plant in the US was in 1978, when Volkswagen bought a partially completed factory from Chrysler. Volkswagen was actually one of the first foreign car makers to have a factory in the US. Ironically, they were also the first to pull out. Volkswagen managed to churn out 1.5 million vehicles in the plant's short lifespan. It closed down in the late 80s, and with it the chance of another Volkswagen plant this side of the Atlantic or Mexican border.

But it looks like that all about to change. Martin Winterkorn, Volkswagen CEO, revealed in an interview with the German weekly Focus that "If the dollar exchange rate stays at its present level, [Volkswagen] will have to begin thinking about a factory in North America."

And in an attempt to "get closer to customers", Volkswagen is also setting up a second administrative hub near Detroit. With this move, Volkswagen hopes to improve sales and remain competitve in the US market. It will also mean cheaper models.

This announcement comes just a few days after Stephan Jacoby was announced as Volkswagen of America's president and CEO.

Winterkorn did not offer a timeline as to when the plant may be operational.

Chinese VW to come to North America

07/19/07, 08:42am, EDT
volkswagen-passat-r36.jpg

On the heels of Chrysler's joint venture with Chery that will see the two automakers combine efforts on vehicles that will eventually be U.S.-bound, Volkswagen has announced that its venture with Shanghai Auto will result in a vehicle for North American consumers.

According to Reuters, VW and Shanghai Auto will produce a car aimed at the global market. Shanghai Auto and VW have a relationship that dates back more than 20 years, which has helped solidify VW in the ever-growing Chinese automotive market.

Everything we can find on the Shanghai Auto plants says that the cars have attained VW-acceptable levels of quality, but Chinese auto production isn't measured with the careful precision that customers world-wide often expect. Currently, Shanghai Auto produces a variety of VW-branded cars, including its own version of the Passat. No word yet on the details of the car that would arrive in North America.

This comes just days after rumors of VW opening a North American plant, something that seems less and less likely now by the day.

Posted on Tuesday 10 July 2007

VW_Polo_3dr.jpgVolkswagen’s updated Polo hatch is due to bow in 2009, a car that may eventually spawn a new cabrio version as well as an MPV. This rendering, compiled with information from an inside source gives a good indication as to what the final car may look and shows that the same basic shape of the current car will carry over for the new model.

New to the model family will be hybrid drivetrains, as revealed previously by CEO Martin Winterkorn, but prior to the release of the hybrid car will be new BlueMotion diesel versions as well as a possible performance version with VW’s outstanding super-turbocharged 1.4L TSI engine.

Due to the low cost of the Polo, the hybrid system is likely to a mild version that utilizes regenerative braking and electronically controlled components in similar fashion to BMW’s EfficientDynamics technology.

The next-gen polo is also expected to benefit from VW’s recently announced cheaper version of DSG and, when combined with the efficient BlueMotion diesel, could deliver a mileage figure in excess of 60mpg.

VW Polo to spawn cabrio, coupe and MPV
Posted on Tuesday 24 July 2007
Volkswagen is reportedly planning to expand its Polo range by adding new cabrio, coupe and MPV versions of the regular small hatch. The new models will be based on the next-gen Polo due in 2009 and are aimed at widening the target market for the practical hatch. The new cabrio and coupe versions will be targeted at a younger market, while the mini Polo MPV will be aimed at young families after a cheap runabout for city living.

The new cars will compete with popular models such as the Ford Fusion and Fiat Idea, but will feature VW’s latest technology including DSG gearboxes, and efficient TSI engines. According to What Car?, the dual-clutch transmission will be available with a 170hp TSI engine reserved for a new Polo GTi. Other powerplants include a new 64hp 1.2L unit, an 80hp 1.4L engine and a more powerful 1.6L mill. The diesel range will consist of a 69 and 84hp 1.4L motors and a 105hp 1.9L unit.

In addition to the conventional petrol and diesel models, VW will also offer a new hybrid option. Due to the low cost of the Polo, the hybrid system is likely to a mild version that utilizes regenerative braking and electronically controlled components in similar fashion to BMW’s EfficientDynamics technology.
