Edited by vgabi, 19 November 2009 - 08:44. |

There are some companies selling royalty-free or buyout music. When you purchase this type of music you are also buying the rights to use it however you want to use it. These are commonly used in videos that will be mass-produced and distributed. There are other companies selling music on a contract basis. For example, you pay them a fee every time you use one of their songs (sometimes referred to as a “needle-drop” fee), or they’ll sell you the rights to use any song in their library for a limited period of time, such as for one year. These are also commonly used in mass-distributed videos or videos for commercial use. Both of these categories of music may be used in wedding videos as long as you have legally purchased the rights to use them. The popular music played on the radio and sold in stores is classified as copyrighted music. Copyright laws state that you may not reproduce or distribute copyrighted music without written permission from the legal owner of the copyrights. Technically, using these songs in your wedding videos is a violation of copyright laws. However, there are many who believe that under the “fair use” provision, it is acceptable for someone to make a copy of a song that they purchased legally, for their own use and not for commercial distribution or profit. This could imply that it might be okay if a client wanted to use a song from their own collection of music (obtained legitimately) for their own video. The final decision as to which category of music to use for your videos rests entirely on you. |
