A V6 diesel Mercedes-Benz Vito with a fire-breathing 204 bhp on tap is set to go on sale in May.

Offering maximum torque of 324 lb/ft and able to hurtle from 0 to 60mph in just 8.3 seconds, the 120CDI joins the powerful petrol Vito 123 in the manufacturer's line-up. Mercedes expects to sell around 100 a year in the UK.

Before the end of the year the Three Pointed Star will also be launching 4x4 versions of Vito on this side of the Channel.

All Vitos will be updated to comply with the new Euro 4 exhaust emission regulations due for introduction in October. Fitting their diesels with piezo injectors will boost power outputs — the 109 bhp engine for example goes to 114 bhp — and should reduce fuel consumption by around 2.5 per cent, says the company.

Since November all the vehicle's body panels have been zinc-coated on both sides, while additional insulation aimed at cutting in-cab engine noise has been fitted since January.

Vario is getting a Euro 4 makeover, with new engines at 129 bhp, 156 bhp and 177 bhp together with some minor cosmetic changes, including new bumpers.
