I have downloaded a file with a .bin file extension. I suspect this file is a .zip, a WinRAR or something else.
I don't want to experiment renaming the file, double clicking on it, and then seeing what happens. Is there an application that can identify files, regardless of what file extension they are ? It could do algorithmetic checksumming etc or look for certain keywords that identify the file. Thanks |

how big is that file? If it has @700 MB is the same as an ISO image file, only it has bin extension. You can view that file using Deamon tool (a fake cdrom emulator).

Hello friend, thanks for your post.
The file is 200mb. It could well be an .iso file, although i'd like to find a tool that identify's the file. Back in the days of the Amiga, there used to be a tool that did just this. I've spent quite some time looking for an equivalent, but can't find anything so far ... |

It's a CD Image.
You can mount it into a Virtual CD Rom http://www.softpedia...3/7/3-7-6.shtml or burn it with Nero. |

try a
mount -o loop /path/to/a/directory /path/to/the/file.iso cd /path/to/a/directory ls ..... On Unix/Linux everything it's a file. |
