Here is a question for all you hard core linux people. Say we have a linux box who's kernel gets corrupted. It will not boot. (which i have never seen this, but i'm not a seasoned pro with linux)

Isn't there a way to get the data off the hard drive even tho the OS will not boot. With Knoppix or Slaving the hard drive to another computer.

I had a tech tell me they are sending a linux box off because the kernel was corrupt and they have to do a system restore? I just figured they are going to slave the drive, get the info, and reinstall the linux os and put the extracted data on the new hard drive.

I just thought you could reinstall the kernel.

Two ways:
1) Easiest way: put the drive on another computer (linux recommended in order to preserve content ownership and attributes), back up your data, reinstall and restore data;
2) Tricky way: boot up from a live CD, mount original root, chroot to it (remember here to mount procfs), mount additional partitions if any (see /etc/mtab), install a new kernel for your distribution and it should do the trick.
