Motoring enthusiasts across Britain mourned the passing of the Monaro. The only Australian-built car to be sold in the UK offered raw and exciting performance thanks to its 6.0-liter V8 and rear-wheel drive set up.

But the thunder from down under hasn’t stopped yet – in fact it’s only going to get louder. Vauxhall has announced the arrival of a new Aussie musclecar – the VXR8 – and it’s more powerful and exciting than even the legendary Monaro.

The dramatic-looking new saloon is powered by the same 6.0-liter V8 as the outgoing Monaro VXR, but revisions to the engine have made it even more efficient. It now develops a massive 420 bhp and 406 lb-ft of torque, giving it enough grunt to sprint from 0-60 mph in just 4.9 seconds. No other supercar offers this sort of power for anywhere near the VXR8’s price.

Yet the VXR8, based on Australia ’s Holden HSV Clubsport R8, offers more in the way of practicality than the outgoing Monaro, with four doors and space for all the family.

Although practical, with a spacious boot, comfortable, long-legged cruising ability and luxuries such as climate control and leather trim, the VXR8 is certainly no softie. Driver aids such as the stability system and traction control can be turned off at the flick of a switch – perfect for drivers who want to hone their skills on a track day.

And VXR8 goes as well as it stops, too, with powerful 365mm front disc brakes that slow the car down from 60 mph to a standstill faster than a Lamborghini Murcielago or BMW M5.

In response to customer demand, the VXR8 will also be the first VXR model to be offered with an automatic gearbox. In order to maintain the control which VXR buyers require, the optional £1,400 self-shifter has a manual override and a sport setting which ensure the performance isn’t blunted – in fact the auto is only half a second slower to 60 mph than the manual.

Satellite navigation and 20-inch wheels will be offered as options for those who want to make their VXR8 look more distinctive and help find their way to the best driving roads. Even with all the option boxes ticked however, the VXR8 is still around half the price of other cars with comparable performance.

V8 411cp 51000euro.

The VXR8 is familiar in parts, and all-new in others. Costing £35,105, it is still about performance for peanuts, but this time there’s the added practicality of four doors compared to the old Monaro. Does this diminish the ultimate Vauxhall’s appeal? Not one bit: fast saloons have always been cooler than their two-door counterparts, and with genuine room for four the VXR8 has all the makings of a cut-price M5 or RS4 alternative.

Based on Holden’s latest VE series Commodore, the VXR8 benefits from improved weight distribution (51/49 per cent front/rear), a five-link rear suspension, a stiffer bodyshell and quicker-witted steering.

Turning the workaday Holden saloon – where even the entry model gets a 3.6 V6 – into a super-saloon falls to Holden Special Vehicles, which upgrades the brakes, engine and suspension and fits the aggressive bumpers and indiscreet boot spoiler.

Vauxhall claims the first UK buyers are coming from Imprezas and Evos – entirely understandable when you see the VXR8 in profile. There’s no question that it comes from the ‘if you’ve got it, flaunt it’ school of styling. Large 19-inch alloys are standard, with 20-inch rims a £2500 option. The standard exhaust finishes with four tailpipes, replaced on our test car with the £1100 sports exhaust.

The significant carryover from the Monaro is the powertrain: the same 6.0-litre LS2 V8 that powers the current Corvette, but with electrical tweakery nudging power up to 411bhp, mated to the same six-speed manual ’box as before (with a shorter final drive ratio) or, for the first time in a VXR product, an optional automatic, also with six speeds.

Yet for all the talk of new-generation Commodores and multi-link suspension, the VXR8 remains a steel-bodied car powered by an engine producing just 69bhp per litre. Effective and characterful, perhaps, but hardly cutting-edge.

A 6.0-litre engine, 411bhp, rear-wheel drive… pre-drive billings don’t get much more intimidating. The reality is nowhere near as daunting. The VXR8 is a rapid car, but it’s no vicious animal waiting to bite your hand off, and it’s a darn sight easier to drive than the Monaro.

There’s the same mechanical ’box, needing a positive movement from the shoulder rather than a deft flick of the wrist, but it’s smoother than before. The clutch is also lighter, but the VXR8’s unexpected friendliness comes most from the power delivery, building progressively with no nasty surprises. At idle, just the right level of V8 rumble is present (the standard exhaust is actually quite muted; we prefer the optional sports system) and a stab of throttle sends the big saloon rocking.

Despite the billing, the LS2 remains an old-school engine, preferring capacity over revs, and yet it is prepared to use everything it’s got, revving smoothly right up to its 6600rpm red line, where it’s far from strained, but leaves no doubt you’re asking a lot from a big engine.

In reality you needn’t try so hard, the engine most content running between 2000 and 4400rpm, where peak torque is produced and the soundtrack is at its most delicious: a deep V8 thrum overlaid with a hard metallic beat. Fourth gear is good for 20-130mph, with each 20mph increment below 100mph dispatched in less than 4.5sec.

Vauxhall claims the VXR8 will hit 60mph from rest in 4.9sec, although admittedly with a well run-in engine. Our test car arrived with under 1000 miles on the clock, and whether using launch control (leave ESP on, dial in 3500rpm, dump the clutch) or old-fashioned throttle control, our best was a 5.4sec average.

Getting to 100mph takes 13.2sec – not hanging about, but some way off the M5/RS4 pace and about par with a BMW 335i. The VXR8 may have 411bhp, but it also weighs 1840kg and is burdened with quite a slow gearbox.

The large-diameter ventilated disc brakes front and rear stop the VXR8 quickly in dry or wet conditions, stand up well to hard use at the track, and for smooth road use the pedal feel is excellent. In fact, so strong are the brakes that they can, under the harshest of stops, cause the rear suspension a problem –of which more in a moment.

Super-saloons have it tough. They need to be supple for the saloon day job, but also taut enough for the times the ‘super’ alter ego gets loose. Some, such as the M5, use adjustable dampers, allowing you to tailor the car to your mood. A similar system is available on Australian VXR8s, but UK-bound cars do without; it’s one setting for all eventualities.

Over a typical B-road, where the surface refuses to level and there’s the odd crest and compression, the VXR8 remains unfazed, the long wheelbase and weight helping to isolate the worst intrusions. It’s also decently comfortable for long-distance cruising.

Where the VXR8 struggles is on short, sharp impacts, particularly at the rear. Unloaded, the effect on passenger comfort is not huge, even if the suspension can be heard working. But ask it to cope with additional loading and the situation worsens, with the occasional severe thud. More concerning still, under extreme braking we experienced a violent judder from the back axle, a problem we understand Australian testers have also experienced.

If the ride quality is not everything we’d hoped for, the VXR8’s handling is a revelation. Despite its size and weight, the VXR8 changes direction with enthusiasm and controls body movements well. The steering is vastly improved over the Monaro’s – still a little slow off centre, but a more manageable 2.7 turns and decently weighted. You’ve got a much clearer idea of what’s happening at the front and less work to do should the rear break free. Not that a wayward tail should be a problem, for the VXR8 has impressive adhesion and the ESP is well judged.

At 4.9m long, the VXR8 is a big car – 10cm longer than a 5-series or E-class – so it’s no surprise that there’s plenty of cabin space. So much so that with the driver’s seat set all the way back, a six-footer would struggle to drive the car and yet there’s still room behind for the same adult to sit comfortably.

The rear has a fixed bench with space for three and adequate support for all. This space, plus the cavernous 496-litre boot, should help justify the VXR8 as transport for the family man with the wallet for the fuel bills.

Other than the offset pedals, the driving position is excellent. The VXR-branded, half-leather seats are electrically adjustable in eight directions and the steering column for reach and rake. Equipment is generous; dual-zone climate, a CD changer, automatic wipers and lights and parking sensors are standard. The optional sat-nav is better than on other Vauxhalls, even if the graphics don’t match those of premium rivals.

The VXR8 is a major step forward in quality over the Monaro, and we could happily live with the VXR8’s cabin. But in material quality and construction rigour the Vauxhall still lags behind the equivalently priced, if slower, BMW 335i and Audi S4. Our biggest concern is the VXR8’s poor visibility. Thick A-pillars restrict the view at junctions, the spoiler interrupts the rear view and the tiny side mirrors create a huge blindspot.

The VXR8’s more practical body and improved civility should ensure the VXR8 a broader audience than the niche Monaro. Still, Vauxhall is only bringing 350 to the UK each year and has taken orders for over 100 already, so if you’re tempted you’ll need to move quickly. No surprises that fuel costs are going to be high; we averaged 17.1mpg, although cruising at 70mph in sixth returns a more affordable 31mpg. Servicing is every 10,000 miles at a sensible £295.

Verdict
7 stars out of 10

The VXR8 picks up where the tearaway Monaro left off, except with a welcome dose of maturity; the four-door body is more usable, the clutch lighter, the chassis balance more sophisticated and the interior more befitting a £35k car. Except you can’t domesticate an Aussie bruiser that easily. For all the improvements, the VXR8 remains a rough diamond; the clunky gearbox, crude damping and poor visibility are reminders the VXR8 still has a lot to learn in refinement terms. While we can live with most of these compromises, the rear axle judder under braking does give us cause for continuing concern.

Yet despite the odd rough edge, the thirst and the fact that despite the huge engine and meaty soundtrack it isn’t that quick, it’s difficult not to fall for the big Vauxhall. It deserves praise, because what it’s not short on is character. Sometimes that matters more than ride quality or interior plastics.

For Meaty V8, surprising chassis balance, low price, grip, space

AgainstStill a little rough around the edges, suspension judder under heavy braking

CONSUM: 22.8mpg vs 18.5mpg ( 12.39 L/100km vs 15.27L/100Km) - ~19%  in favoarea Bmw
EMISII: CO2:  295g/km vs 365g/km again castiga BMW (diferenta ~19%)

Cilindreea n-are nici o relevanta.

Cand compari 2 solutii constructive diferite (OHV vs DOHC) cilindreea nu-ti spune nimic despre dimensiunile motorului. Arata-mi alta masina V8 cu motorul in fata si profil atat de jos:

http://www.seriouswh...io-1280x960.htm

Corvette Z06: 7 litri, 505HP, consum oras/afara 16/26 mpg
Ferrari F430: 4.3 litri, 490HP, consum 11/16 mpg
