BBC to Air Live Online Olympic Coverage on 24 TV Channels in HD

[ http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/sites/default/files/2011/12/london-2012-olympics_copy.jpg - Pentru incarcare in pagina (embed) Click aici ]

Watch every second of the BBC’s 2012 Olympics coverage on Sky with the help of 24 brand new channels, dedicated to the London Games

More than 10 million Sky homes will be able to watch the 2012 London Olympics through two dozen brand new BBC channels which will be dedicated to the BBC’s live coverage of the games. In addition, more than 5 million Sky homes with Sky+HD set-top boxes will be able to watch the coverage in stunning high definition (HD), to make their Olympics experience even richer and more immersive.

The innovative agreement will mean that Sky homes will have access to comprehensive coverage of this summer’s Olympics, with up to 24 live dedicated HD and SD channels running simultaneously at peak times during the games. The 48 brand new channels, which are being created specifically for the Olympics, will launch into Sky’s Electronic Program Guide (EPG) and will show every sport from cycling to archery, swimming to wrestling, tennis to the 100 metre final. Alongside coverage on the existing BBC channels, Sky homes will be able to enjoy 2,500 hours’ worth of live BBC coverage throughout the Games.

What’s more, because Sky homes will be able to view the channels via the Sky EPG, Sky+ homes will be able to record the coverage to watch at a time that suits them so that they can record every one of their favourite events and not miss any of the action.

As with the rest of the HD channels on the Sky platform, the new channels will be broadcast in 1080i and in wide-screen to enhance the viewing experience. The BBC’s Olympics coverage will also be accessible via the BBC Red Button.

Stephen van Rooyen, Managing Director of Sky’s Sales and Marketing Group, said: "The London Olympics is a huge event in 2012 and one that we are all looking forward to here at Sky. We believe that the best way to watch the Olympics is in glorious HD as it offers viewers the best possible viewing experience and, supported by Sky+, the flexibility of watching the action at a time that suits our customers. We’re delighted that every single Sky home will have the opportunity to enjoy unprecedented coverage of the biggest UK sporting event in a generation."

When watching the coverage with Sky+, customers will be able to record, rewind and replay crucial moments throughout the Olympics and also use this feature to record their favourite sports and events from the games automatically on their Sky box. The Sky+ Remote Record option also allows customers to set their Sky+ or Sky+HD box to record from mobile devices or the web.

The 48 new channels will be added to the Sports section of Sky’s Electronic Programme Guide from the 24th of July. The channels are free-to-air and available to any Sky home, including Freesat from Sky homes. The HD channels are available on any Sky+HD box and do not require a subscription, but do require an HD ready TV. Customers will require a Sky subscription in order to use Sky+.

In addition to the live Olympic coverage scheduled to broadcast over the 24 new BBC channels, comprehensive Olympic coverage will also be available on BBC One, BBC One HD, BBC HD, BBC Two, BBC Three and the BBC News Channel, of all which will also be available to all
10.3 million Sky homes.

HD boost for the Bulgarian DTH market

The Bulgarian market is trying to catch up with the rest of Europe, introducing DTT in mid 2013 and aiming to complete the transition to digital terrestrial broadcasting in September next year. This will allow for a higher quality picture and better viewing experience and for more channels to be broadcast in the same frequency bandwidth.
It will also present another opportunity for DTH companies, firstly by providing better picture quality, keeping more people in front of TV sets and making them willing to pay more for high-end services.
Secondly, satellite technology will be a very useful addition to digital terrestrial broadcasting. Besides being a total must in remote mountainous areas, it will work well in new neighbourhoods without cable infrastructure, especially in the suburbs.
One of the most important advantages for DTH platforms is the increasingly popular HD standard, which works better in a digital environment. And Astra has already switched to a 100% digital broadcast, with its partner in Bulgaria Satellite BG also offering 100% digital content via the Astra 23.5 degrees East position.
Thirty per cent of TV households in Bulgaria are DTH subscribers and a market study shows that 51% of the population knows that satellite reception is the most reliable.
Furthermore, Satellite Monitor research, which is conducted annually by GfK, has revealed that satellite is the leading TV reception technology in Europe. This demonstrates the excellent market potential of Bulgaria, where the local economy is recovering at a steady pace, the telecom business thriving and subscribers looking for quality, not just the lowest price.
When entering the Bulgarian market SES Astra undertook some serious research that showed that while most people already know what HD is, there is a large portion of viewers who are unaware of the newly available technology. An additional HD awareness campaign was therefore organised and today SES Astra’s partner Satellite BG provides – at 28 :cursing:  – the highest number of HD channels in a single premium quality offer.
The HD era in Bulgaria started couple of years ago with the first appearance of couple of channels in DTH platforms` portfolios. However, HDTV sets were available in the upper segment of the market even before such channels were offered and e home video technology, DVD and Blu-ray set higher standards for TV reception.
HD therefore became the dominant standard and today the most popular channels are either broadcast in HD or plan to simulcast a HD version. This year, as a result of Euro 2012, even the public television BNT1 decided to set up a simulcast of the games in HD.
This indicates major support for the technology in Bulgaria and has made the viewing experience of football fans richer and more fulfilling. Indeed, sports events will this year definitely increase the TV reach and the popularity of HD technology.
Each major company, a technological leader in the communications industry, is aware that sooner or later the HD standard will be replaced by something even more stunning and exceptional. This will be yet another opportunity for satellite operators and DTH platforms to expand their reach.
DTH technology is versatile and easily adjustable between standards and resolutions, as has been proven with 3D technology.
SES Astra already broadcasts seven 3D channels and some market analysts expect that in the near future there will be ultra high definition TV channels available, offering resolutions above the current 1080p. But until then, HD will rule the TV world and bring families together in front of the TV for a favourite movie or game.

MTV Live HD leaves Canal+Spain

[ http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c349/dani1976/HDTV/mtv_live_hd_us.png - Pentru incarcare in pagina (embed) Click aici ]

Spain's Canal+ has stopped broadcasting MTV Live HD after four years on air, citing alleged technical problems with the satellite signal.
It has also removed all information relating to the channel from its website, although it hasn't ruled out a comeback for the channel.
MTV Live HD is distributed by Viacom through the Astra satellite and is still broadcast by other pay-TV platforms in Spain such as ONO.

Since 2011, the channel has replaced MTVN HD, which had been on air since 2008.

It was the only music channel on Canal+'s basic package, although the classical music channel Mezzo Live HD is available in its premium packages.
MTV's operations in Spain are going through times of change. Although not confirmed by Viacom, Prisa's radio Cadena SER also published a few weeks ago that the DTT channel of MTV was going to leave Spain's free-to-air schedule. The forthcoming restructuring of the digital spectrum is making the big broadcasters redraw their strategies in Spain.
