Public-service broadcaster France Télévisions and the Eurosport France channel have agreed a deal to retain rights to the Coupe de France club football knockout tournament, according to L’Équipe. The French newspaper said the two broadcasters have agreed to pay a total of €22m ($25.6m) per year for the rights across the four seasons spanning 2018-19 to 2021-22. France Télévisions and Eurosport France’s current deal with the French Football Federation is worth €16m per season from 2014-15 to 2017-18.

The FFF launched the sales process in January and L’Équipe reported in March that France Télévisions and Eurosport France had made an offer worth €20m per season. This was not deemed sufficient by the federation, leading to private negotiations between the three parties.

L’Équipe added that the €2m per season fee for international rights to the Coupe de France will lead the tournament to be worth a record €96m over its next rights cycle.

Vivendi lining up Italian pay-television platform - report

French media group Vivendi is pursuing plans to form an Italian pay-television platform in association with its Telecom Italia and Groupe Canal subsidiaries, according to Les Echos. The French newspaper said the platform would be branded Canale + and be modelled on the existing French broadcaster, offering a mix of sports and entertainment programming. Les Echos said Telecom Italia would be the majority shareholder in the venture, with its board having already agreed to the proposal. Such a platform would compete head-on with the pay-television unit of Italian broadcaster Mediaset entitled Mediaset Premium.

In May, Vivendi secured European Union antitrust approval for its plan to gain control of Telecom Italia after the European Commission said it had agreed to sell the Italian telecommunications company’s majority stake in broadcasting services group Persidera. Vivendi became the main shareholder in Telecom Italia in June 2015 and strengthened its hold earlier in May by appointing two thirds of its board. Telecom Italia currently owns 70 per cent of Persidera, while Vivendi is also engaged in a battle with Italian regulators over its intentions in the market.

Vivendi in April said it was considering legal action after Italian communications authority AGCOM ordered it to cut its stake in either Mediaset or Telecom Italia within a year. Vivendi is the single biggest shareholder in Italy’s main telco, with 24 per cent, and has recently built up an interest of around 28.8-per-cent in Mediaset. Vivendi and Mediaset are currently engaged in a bitter dispute. Mediaset, one of the leading sports broadcasters in Italy, is seeking damages from Vivendi after it stepped away from an April 2016 agreement to take full control of pay-television broadcaster Mediaset Premium.

Romanian Liga 1 rights-holder in corruption probe

Romania’s anti-corruption authority, the DNA, is set to bring criminal charges against a subsidiary of telecommunications company RCS-RDS. Integrasoft will be charged with bribery and money laundering offences, according to multiple reports in the country. The charges are connected to the award of rights to Liga 1 top-tier football matches in Romania, according to the Profit.ro news website.

The DNA has seized two buildings operated by RCS-RDS as part of the investigation. RCS-RDS, which operates Digi Sport, has the rights to Liga 1 until the middle of 2019.

Discovery commences exclusive talks for Scripps takeover

US media company Discovery Communications has entered into exclusive talks to acquire cable television network owner Scripps Networks Interactive, according to multiple reports. Earlier this month it was reported that Discovery and rival media company Viacom had held separate merger talks with Scripps. However, the Reuters news agency said Discovery, which has targeted Scripps on previous occasions, has now moved into exclusive discussions for a deal that is set to be worth in excess of $12bn (€10.3bn). A deal could come as soon as next week.

Discovery operates international sports broadcaster Eurosport, while Scripps, which owns various entertainment channels, last month participated in a funding round for US OTT service fuboTV. Scripps also operates Polish media company TVN, a major sports broadcaster in the country.

Premier League claims anti-piracy win with High Court order

Football’s English Premier League has obtained a High Court order that will require UK internet service providers (ISPs) to block servers that are hosting illegal streams of matches. The Premier League said the order, which will be in place for the 2017-18 season, forms part of its “biggest ever crackdown” on the illegal streaming of its content. It is hoped the order will allow the league to combat the sale and use of illegal streaming devices such as pre-loaded IPTV and so-called ‘Kodi’ boxes. The Premier League obtained a similar order for the final two months of the 2016-17 season. The order resulted in the blocking of more than 5,000 server IP addresses that had been illegally streaming content.

Kevin Plumb, the Premier League’s director of legal services, said: “The protection of our copyright, and the investment made by our broadcast partners, is hugely important to the Premier League and the future health of English football. "The ability that clubs have to develop and acquire talented players, to build and improve stadiums, and to support communities and schools is all predicated on being able to market, sell and protect commercial rights. "We are pleased the courts have recognised this with the granting of this significant blocking order."

US cinemas to show Mayweather-McGregor fight

Cinema tickets purchased in advance will be priced at $40 (€34.16), compared to the $99.95 that, according to the Associated Press, fans will have to pay to watch the fight on high-definition pay-per-view television.

Tickets for the fight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, will be priced between $500 and $10,000. The super welterweight bout on August 26 will be the first time that champions from boxing and MMA will meet in a sanctioned boxing match.

Watching Brief (Vol.166) UK TV Audiences 10th to 16th July

UK viewing data for the week between Monday 10th July and Sunday 16th July, including audiences for the British Grand Prix and the second week of Wimbledon and leading free-to-air audiences in June.

Sky’s operating profit dips, plans outlined for Spanish service

European pay-television group Sky has reported a six per cent fall in operating profit due to the increased costs of rights to football’s English Premier League, while it has outlined plans to launch a “simple and affordable” OTT platform in Spain.
Sky today (Thursday) unveiled its financial results for the full year ending June 30, 2017 as its proposed takeover by media company 21st Century Fox continues to roll on. Sky reported an operating profit of £1.468bn (€1.64bn/$1.91bn), down £97m on the prior year amid additional Premier League costs of £629m. Group revenues grew by more than £1bn to £12.916bn. UK and Ireland revenue was up four per cent to £8.6bn driven by a higher customer base, increased product take-up including Sky Fibre, Sky Q and Sky Mobile and the impact of pricing taken in the year.

Revenue in Germany grew nine per cent to £1.858bn behind what Sky said was good customer and product growth and a strong increase in advertising. In Italy, revenue increased by four per cent to £2.458bn reflecting higher average customers, more product penetration and increased advertising from free-to-air channels and on demand content.
Operating profit in the UK and Ireland fell by 14 per cent to £1.292bn. However, the case was different in Germany and Austria, as well as Italy, where these figures increased by 900 per cent and 139 per cent to £40m and £136m, respectively.
Looking forward, Sky said that it intends to launch an OTT service in Spain during the first half of the 2017-18 financial year, adding that the country has the Eurozone’s fourth largest economy and the market with the largest free-to-air headroom in Europe outside of its existing footprint.

“We will leverage our technology assets and brand, and over time… our strong position in content, whether from third parties or content we have created ourselves,” Sky’s chief financial officer Andrew Griffith said. “We don’t sit here with a big bank of content (for Spain). Today is more a statement of intent and we will come back with more detail.”
Karen Bradley, the UK’s Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, last week confirmed that she has not yet decided whether to refer the proposed takeover of Sky by 21st Century Fox to the Competition & Markets authority for a ‘phase two’ investigation. Bradley, who has already said that she is “minded to” refer the deal to the watchdog due to concerns about media plurality, said that, despite having received representations from various parties involved in the deal, nothing had led her to change her mind at this point.

Fox has already received regulatory approval in all other required territories for its proposed takeover of Sky. Fox is bidding to acquire the 61 per cent of Sky that it does not own. Commenting on today’s financial report, Sky’s chief executive, Jeremy Darroch, said: “We enter 17/18 in a strong position with significant growth potential. Despite the broader consumer environment remaining uncertain, we are confident of delivering on the plans we’ve laid out as we continue to give our customers the best content, great products and industry leading service.”

BBC confirms rights deal for PGA Championship

UK public-service broadcaster the BBC has today (Thursday) confirmed it has acquired rights to golf major the PGA Championship. The BBC said it has struck a deal for the 2017 edition of the tournament, which takes place at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina from August 10-13. The live television coverage of the Championship will kick off on BBC iPlayer, BBC Sport online and the Red Button service with the conclusion of each day's play also shown on the BBC Two channel. This strategy is due to the tournament clashing with the BBC’s coverage of the World Athletics Championships in London.

The agreement will mark the BBC’s return to coverage of all four days of a major following the controversial loss of rights to The Open. In February 2015, pay-television broadcaster Sky agreed a five-year deal with the R&A, which operates the Open, for the 2017 event through to 2021. However, the BBC in September 2015 ended its deal early, allowing Sky to assume coverage from last year’s edition. PGA of America chief commercial officer, Jeff Price, this month said the organisation would not extend its UK rights deal with Sky in favour of exploring a new model for the event. Sky’s rights deal for the PGA Championship has run for a decade, but was not renewed for this year’s tournament.

Meanwhile, BT Sport is in talks with Augusta National Golf Club, host organisation of the Masters, in an effort to take another of the sport’s major championships away from Sky, according to The Telegraph. The UK newspaper said the talks come with Sky and Augusta reportedly at odds over the financial terms of an extension to their contract. Sky has been the main UK broadcaster of the Masters since 2011, with the BBC showing the final two rounds of the annual event live.

ERR teams up with football association to secure Uefa rights deal

Estonian public-service broadcaster ERR has agreed a deal for a package of national team football rights marketed by European governing body Uefa through a partnership with the Estonian Football Association (EJL). ERR has secured rights to the European Qualifiers for the Euro 2020 and 2022 Fifa World Cup tournaments, the 2018-19 and 2020-21 Nations League competitions and other international matches. It has also landed a secondary package relating to the Euro 2020 championship, which will take place in cities across Europe.

The Postimees.ee website said the agreement is worth €1.2m ($1.4m), nearly three times as much as contracts signed for previous rights packages. It added that with a total sports rights budget of €1.2m, under which it also has to broadcast other events, ERR needed a partner to seal the deal. It has therefore entered into an agreement through which the EJL will provide up to €950,000 of the funds needed.Chief television sports editor at ERR, Rivo Saarna, said such an agreement is unprecedented. Saarna added: “We have a contract with the association for €950,000, which does not mean they will necessarily contribute as much. That is the maximum amount.”

EJL president Aivar Pohlak said the association has five years to secure the funds. “However, even if we look at it in yearly instalments, the sum is unprecedented,” he added.
CAA Eleven, Uefa’s exclusive marketing agency for the sale of certain media and commercial rights relating to its national team competitions, launched a tender in Estonia in May, with deadlines for bids having been set at June 22.

Discovery seals $14.6bn deal for Scripps

US media company Discovery Communications has today (Monday) sealed a deal to acquire cable television network owner Scripps Networks Interactive, with the agreement valued at $14.6bn (€12.5bn). The purchase price implies a total cash and stock transaction value of $14.6bn, including the assumption of Scripps’ net debt of approximately $2.7bn. Following closure of the deal, Scripps’ shareholders will own approximately 20 per cent of Discovery’s fully diluted common shares and Discovery’s shareholders will own approximately 80 per cent. Earlier this month it was reported that Discovery and rival media company Viacom had held separate merger talks with Scripps.

However, Discovery, which has targeted Scripps on previous occasions, was last week said to have moved into exclusive discussions for a deal. Discovery operates international sports broadcaster Eurosport, while Scripps, which owns various entertainment channels, last month participated in a funding round for US OTT service fuboTV. Scripps also operates Polish media company TVN, a major sports broadcaster in the country.
“We believe that by coming together with Scripps, we will create a stronger, more flexible and more dynamic media company with a global content engine that can be fully optimised and monetised across our combined networks, products and services in every country around the world,” David Zaslav, president and chief executive of Discovery Communications, said.

Kenneth Lowe, chairman, president and chief executive of Scripps Networks Interactive, added: “This agreement with Discovery presents an unmatched opportunity for Scripps to grow its leading lifestyle brands across the world and on new and emerging channels including short-form, direct-to-consumer and streaming platforms.”
The takeover is subject to approval by Discovery and Scripps’ shareholders, regulatory approvals, and other customary closing conditions. It is expected to close by early 2018.

Bassani to drive EuroCup media development

EuroLeague Basketball has appointed Andrea Bassani as the media manager of its EuroCup club competition. Bassani was one of the founding members that helped to create the Euroleague in 2000 and has served as chief television and new media officer of the organisation for its entire 17-year history. The appointment comes after Euroleague Ventures, the 10-season joint venture between the Euroleague and the IMG agency, confirmed in June that it would centralise the EuroCup’s media rights from the 2017-18 season.

Euroleague Basketball and IMG agreed a revamped commercial structure and defined a new revenue distribution model, similar to that of the top-tier Euroleague’s centralised structure.
The enhanced media structure includes a significant investment in production. Euroleague said that this will provide fans with better quality broadcasts and a wider range of content on digital platforms.

Dish takes action over Univision’s Facebook streaming

Dish Network has launched legal action over a streaming deal between rival US pay-television provider Univision Deportes and social media platform Facebook. In February, Facebook and Univision Deportes agreed to stream selected live matches from the broadcaster’s coverage of Liga MX, the top tier of club football in Mexico, free of charge on Facebook. However, according to Cablefax, Dish has said in a lawsuit that the deal is in conflict with its own affiliate agreement with Univision. Dish said that the agreement prohibits Univision from “allowing linear services to be distributed for free via the internet or a wireless cellular provider.”
North American Major League Soccer coverage on Dish is broadcast in Spanish while the Facebook games are streamed live in Spanish, but Dish said that the broadcasts are essentially the same and, as such, the company is hoping to secure a permanent injunction to retain such arrangements.

The lawsuit added: “It has undermined the value of Dish’s licensing and distribution deal with the Univision Entities, by making covered content available for free through a third-party distributor. And it has and will undoubtedly cost Dish profits and the goodwill of its subscribers and potential subscribers, who are less likely to purchase Dish services or the necessary subscriptions to access its Liga MX content, since games can be viewed for free on the internet or through a wireless cellular provider.”

In March, Facebook also agreed a deal for at least 22 matches during the 2017 Major League Soccer season that were scheduled to be broadcast on Univision networks in Spanish to be made available in the US for live streaming on the broadcaster’s official Facebook page.

Olympic Channel content to feature on Eurosport

In addition, consumers on the Showtime PPV website and application will have access to a special free trial for the Showtime standalone streaming service and CBS All Access. England’s women to receive terrestrial showcase as Channel 5 extends ECB deal

The England & Wales Cricket Board has extended its rights deal with UK commercial broadcaster Channel 5, with the new contract set to afford the women’s national team free-to-air exposure for the first time. Channel 5 has held highlights rights to the home games of England’s men’s team since 2006. The new two-year deal will extend this association through to the end of 2019. Channel 5’s current four-year contract was due to expire at the end of 2017. Channel 5 viewers will have the chance to watch highlights from all of England’s men’s and women’s home games, including the men’s 2019 Ashes series against Australia. The highlights package will continue to be broadcast in its primetime slot.

The addition of women’s highlights to the package comes after England last month won the World Cup on home soil. In June, pay-television broadcaster Sky retained the majority of its rights with the ECB, as public-service broadcaster the BBC returned as a live broadcaster of the sport under new deals that will be worth £1.1bn (€1.23bn/$1.43bn) in total. The ECB awarded media rights for all of its domestic first-class county and international matches, played at home, for the five-year period spanning 2020 to 2024.

The BBC’s agreement means live cricket returns to terrestrial television in the UK for the first time since commercial broadcaster Channel 4 aired coverage in 2005. The BBC last showed live cricket in 1999 and will take over the international highlights package currently held by Channel 5.

Disney steps up move for BAMTech, unveils ESPN OTT service

The Walt Disney Company has agreed to acquire a majority shareholding in BAMTech, the video technology business of MLB Advanced Media, the interactive media arm of Major League Baseball. Disney will pay $1.58bn (€1.35bn) to acquire an additional 42 per cent of BAMTech from MLBAM after having taken up the option to accelerate its acquisition of a controlling stake. A year ago, it was revealed that ESPN would launch a new direct-to-consumer service after Walt Disney confirmed the initial investment in BAMTech.
The media company also confirmed that its ESPN-branded video-streaming service will launch in early 2018, with a new Disney-branded direct-to-consumer streaming service starting in 2019.

The ESPN-branded OTT service will offer coverage of about 10,000 live events per year, including contests from Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League, Major League Soccer, grand slam tennis and college sports. Individual sport packages will also be available for purchase, including MLB.TV, NHL.TV and MLS Live. The new service will be available through the ESPN app.
“The media landscape is increasingly defined by direct relationships between content creators and consumers, and our control of BAMTech’s full array of innovative technology will give us the power to forge those connections, along with the flexibility to quickly adapt to shifts in the market,” said Bob Iger, Walt Disney’s chairman and chief executive.

“This acquisition and the launch of our direct-to-consumer services mark an entirely new growth strategy for the Company, one that takes advantage of the incredible opportunity that changing technology provides us to leverage the strength of our great brands.” The BAMTech transaction is subject to regulatory approval. When the deal is approved, Iger will serve as the chairman of the BAMTech board, with MLBAM and the NHL continuing as minority stakeholders in the venture, with seats on the board.

ARD, ZDF seal Olympic sublicensing deal

German public-service broadcasters ARD and ZDF have agreed a sublicensing deal with media company Discovery Communications for live and highlights coverage of the Olympic Games through to 2024.
The agreement covers the 2018 winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea; the 2020 summer Games in Tokyo, Japan; the 2022 winter Games in Beijing, China; and the 2024 summer Olympics, which are set to be awarded to the French capital of Paris next month. Free-to-air coverage of the events will alternate daily between ARD and ZDF.

Discovery has rights for the Games across the majority of European territories, including Germany, from 2018 to 2024. Discovery-owned sports broadcaster Eurosport’s coverage will be available in Germany via free-to-air television and on mobile devices.

For Pyeongchang 2018, ARD and ZDF will present a wide selection of free-to-air coverage on television and digital simulcast, as well as three additional feeds of live sport. Eurosport will show free-to-air coverage on Eurosport 1 as a dedicated Games channel, with the broadcaster to hold rights to air every moment of the Games either on television or via digital platforms.
Eurosport will retain exclusivity for prime-time highlights programming during Pyeongchang 2018. Snowboarding, figure skating and ice hockey – excluding German team matches and finals – will also be live and exclusive on Eurosport. The sublicensing agreement is subject to approval by Germany’s broadcasting councils.

CBF hires Synergy Football to market Brazilian national team rights

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has engaged the Synergy Football agency in an advisory role to aid the sale of media rights to national team games. The CBF is seeking to market the rights in Brazil for the period covering November 2017 through to the 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar. The Confederation said it has appointed Swiss-based Synergy after studying the “most modern practices” in the area of media rights sales, adding that the agency will assist it in the formation of a tender process. CBF president Marco Polo Del Nero said: “CBF’s board of directors consulted with many specialist agencies, conducted an exhaustive interview and negotiation process, and opted for Synergy for its global experience and especially for its sales role in the Brazilian media, where it represented for a long time the main European championships, among them the (Uefa) Champions League. We are confident that this step will be significant for our national team and for Brazilian football.”

The move will end a period in which the CBF has taken an in-house approach to marketing its rights. In May, the governing body adopted a new means of broadcasting friendly matches played by its national team after electing not to award the rights to media group Globo.

Globo had held the rights to Brazil’s friendly games, but its deal expired at the end of 2016 and a new agreement was not reached. Brazil faced Argentina and Australia in friendly games in Melbourne on June 9 and June 13, respectively.
The CBF elected to assign television rights for the games to public-service broadcaster TV Brasil and free-to-air network TV Cultura, while also live streaming the matches via its CBF TV platform.

Turner to launch OTT sports platform as Uefa deal confirmed

The Turner Sports division of US cable-television broadcaster Turner Broadcasting System has today (Thursday) announced it will launch a standalone sports streaming service after confirming it has secured exclusive English-language rights to club football competitions the Uefa Champions League and Europa League. Turner’s rights deal with European football’s governing body Uefa was first reported in February, but the company today confirmed it had secured the contract across the three seasons from 2018-19 to 2020-21. In association with the announcement, Turner said its new OTT sports platform will launch in 2018 with the Uefa rights package serving as a “core pillar” of the direct to consumer offering.
Turner’s Champions League coverage will include four live television broadcasts each week throughout the group stage and two televised matches per week during the knockout phase. All other matches will be available live through the new OTT platform, including direct access to the premium streaming service via Bleacher Report.

All semifinal matches, along with the Champions League final, will be nationally televised on TBS or TNT. Turner will also televise the Super Cup on TBS or TNT, Uefa’s annual game showcasing the winner from the previous year’s Champions League against the winner of that same year’s Europa League, beginning in 2018.
The new agreement includes opportunities to distribute Uefa content across a wide variety of Turner platforms. Turner said Bleacher Report, in particular, will also provide extensive, year-long Uefa clips and shoulder and ancillary programming across its full suite of products and its accounts on various social media platforms, including the BRFootball social presence on Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.Commenting on today’s announcement, Turner president David Levy said: “The launch of Turner’s new OTT sports platform and partnership with Uefa aligns with the company’s continued strategy to further expand the distribution ecosystem and our ongoing commitment to engage fans with premium content they crave across all platforms.

“These highly-anticipated matches and supplemental original programming will be a key foundation for our latest direct to consumer business sports offering, as well as coveted content for Bleacher Report and our leading television networks.
“In addition to the new audiences we’ll attract through the streaming service, the partnership will leverage the tremendous reach we have with our television networks and Bleacher Report’s position as the leading digital destination for millennial fans.” Media company 21st Century Fox is the current rights-holder for the Champions League in the US.
