Globo awarded Euro 2020 rights

Brazilian media company Globo has been awarded exclusive rights for the Uefa Euro 2020 international football tournament.

Bundeskartellamt defends no single buyer rule

Germany’s federal cartel office the Bundeskartellamt has moved to defend its new ‘no single buyer’ rule for rights to the country’s Bundesliga top division of club football. In April 2016, the Bundeskartellamt confirmed that it would enforce the rule in the tender for the next circle of domestic broadcast rights to the Bundesliga, spanning the 2017-18 to 2020-21 seasons. German pay-television broadcaster Sky Deutschland previously held all rights to the competition and also the second-tier 2.Bundesliga in Germany, in a deal that ended with the 2016-17 season.

Sky in June 2016 issued a complaint to the Higher Regional Court in Dusseldorf over the matter, but the case was dismissed earlier this year. Bundeskartellamt president Andreas Mundt has now spoken out in defence of the new rule, telling German newspaper Bild the move will help to create more “innovation” in the market. Mundt said: “If you have several players in the market, this promotes innovation and the customer can choose between different formats.”

Infront unveils new CHL rights deals

International sports broadcaster Eurosport has acquired Champions Hockey League rights in Poland while Austrian public-service broadcaster ORF has also become a rights-holder for the European ice hockey competition. Pay-television broadcaster Viasat has also acquired non-exclusive rights in Sweden and will share coverage with public-service broadcaster SVT. The deals will run until at least the end of the 2017-18 season, which gets underway today (Thursday).

The agreements were brokered with the Infront Sports & Media agency, which markets the competition’s rights. Infront added that 22 media companies will show coverage of the tournament in 53 territories worldwide.

Sportsfix catches Bangladesh cricket rights

Sportsfix, a new OTT service in Southeast Asia, has acquired rights to Bangladesh national cricket team home matches. The agreement will kick off with Bangladesh’s series against Australia, with the first Test starting this Sunday.
Sportsfix executive chairman and founder Marcus Luer said: “There is a large Bangladesh community across Southeast Asia, who are as passionate about their cricket team as anyone you have ever seen. We know how to reach this audience through our telco partnerships in the region.” Sportsfix is available in Malaysia through telecommunications company Celcom.

AMC Networks to show KHL in Slovakia

The AMC Networks International Central Europe division of US entertainment company AMC Networks has acquired rights in Slovakia for the Kontinental Hockey League ice hockey competition, according to the Broadband TV News website. The Sport1 and Sport2 pay-television channels will show coverage of the tournament. Sport1 will show 56 games, including most of those featuring Slovakian team Slovan Bratislava, while Sport2 will broadcast 65 matches. All games will be broadcast live and in high definition.

Fox Sports Australia extends UFC rights deal

Pay-television broadcaster Fox Sports Australia has renewed its long-running media-rights agreement with the Ultimate Fighting Championship mixed martial arts series.

Dolce Sport rebrands as Telekom Sport

Romanian pay-television broadcaster Dolce Sport has rebranded as Telekom Sport. The name change brings the broadcaster in line with the branding of its owner, telecommunications company Telekom Romania. TVP boosts Champions League coverage with new NC Plus deal

Polish public-service broadcaster TVP has enhanced its coverage of the Uefa Champions League under a new sublicensing deal for the club football competition struck with domestic rights-holder, pay-television operator NC Plus. Under the agreement, TVP1 will broadcast one game per week on Wednesdays throughout the 2017-18 season. The deal commenced yesterday with Real Madrid’s 3-0 win over Apoel Nicosia.

TVP’s coverage will be complemented by an hour-long programme after its weekly game showing highlights from all matches. TVP had previously held rights to Champions League games featuring Polish teams, as well as the final itself. Coverage of the Champions League is set to change in Poland from next season.

Commercial and pay-television broadcaster Polsat in June confirmed the acquisition of exclusive rights for the Champions League and Europa League. The rights for both competitions will run for three seasons, from 2018-19 to 2020-21, and cover television, internet and mobile platforms.

TF1 agrees F1 rights deal for French GP's return

Formula One will return to TF1 in 2018 after the French commercial broadcaster signed a multi-year deal for rights to the motor-racing series.
The three-year deal covers the 2018 to 2020 seasons and grants TF1 live and exclusive free-to-air rights to four grand prix races. TF1 previously covered the sport from 1992 to 2012. Under the new agreement, TF1 will broadcast live the French Grand Prix, which is returning to the F1 calendar next year. The broadcaster will also show live coverage of the Monaco Grand Prix, as well as two more races that have not yet been confirmed.

The deal also includes full highlights coverage throughout the season. TF1’s coverage plans include F1 content on weekly car television show Automoto and the Rendez-vous Sport programme. The deal comes after French pay-television broadcaster Canal Plus in May agreed a three-year extension to its F1 rights deal. The agreement runs from 2018 to 2020 and marked the first major broadcast contract struck by the sport’s new owners, US media company Liberty Media.
Canal Plus picked up F1 rights in 2013 after TF1’s coverage of the sport ended.

The French GP will return to the Formula One calendar for the 2018 season after an absence of 10 years. A race will be held each year at Le Castellet’s Circuit Paul Ricard, near Marseille. A five-year race deal from 2018 onwards was unveiled in Paris in December.

Eurosport adds UCI World Championships to cycling portfolio

International sports broadcaster Eurosport has acquired exclusive rights in 36 European countries to the International Cycling Union’s (UCI) World Championship events. The four-year deal runs from 2017 to 2020 and grants Eurosport rights to events such as the Road World Championships, Track Cycling World Championships and Cyclo-cross World Championships. Eurosport will hold rights for all UCI events across Europe, except in France, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland and Finland. Its coverage will be non-exclusive in the following markets: Albania, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland and the UK.

Eurosport agreed the deal with the UCI and the European Broadcasting Union consortium of public-service broadcasters. As well as the aforementioned World Championships, the agreement includes the Cyclo-Cross World Cup, Urban Cycling World Championships, Track Cycling World Cup, BMX World Championships and Mountain Bike World Championships. The contract bolsters Eurosport’s cycling portfolio, which includes rights to Grand Tours the Giro d’Italia, Tour de France and Vuelta a España.

Eurosport chief executive Peter Hutton said: “After a four-year absence from Eurosport screens, we are delighted to have reached an agreement with the UCI for the next four-year cycle. Along with our enhanced production of events such as the Tour de France, we can continue to claim the mantle of the Home of Cycling.”
The deal has been signed ahead of the start of the Road World Championships in Bergen, Norway this weekend.

Serie A international rights attract nearly 100 offers

A total of 95 offers from 30 companies have been submitted in the international rights-sales process for Serie A, the top division in Italian football, as well as the Coppa Italia knockout tournament and the Supercoppa Italiana clash between the Serie A and Coppa Italia winners.
The bids were submitted by the September 15 deadline, but the identities of the companies will remain undisclosed, according to Lega Serie A, which operates the division.

The rights have been split into six main packages for the three seasons from 2018-19 to 2020-21. These are: Serie A, Coppa Italia, betting, in-flight/in-ship, ‘Pick’ and Italian Communities. The Pick package provides an opportunity to assign preferred Serie A matches to specific kick-off times and is applicable to Serie A only. The final package is a dedicated Italian-language package specifically intended to serve Italian communities outside Italy.
Lega Serie A is being advised by the Infront Sports & Media agency.

BeIN to adopt ‘rational’ strategy in Ligue 1 rights battle

Yousef Al-Obaidly, deputy chief executive at beIN Media Group and president of beIN Sports France, has said the pay-television broadcaster hopes the French Football League (LFP) launches a new rights tender as late as possible, noting that it will be “rational” in what is expected to be increased competition in the process.
In April 2014, pay-television broadcaster Canal Plus acquired rights in France for the two main packages of the next cycle of domestic rights for Ligue 1, the top division of domestic football, while beIN Sports acquired the other four packages. The agreements run for four seasons, from 2016-17 to 2019-20. BeIN also holds exclusive distribution rights for the international market and the LFP’s next rights tender is expected to be keenly contested with telecommunications company Altice now a major player in the sports rights market through its pay-television platform SFR Sport.

“Of course, we would prefer the LFP to launch its tender as late as possible, because otherwise it will create uncertainty among subscribers,” Al-Obaidly told French newspaper Le Figaro.
“The market has become more complicated with the arrival of SFR which has allocated significant financial resources from its telecoms activities in media and sports content. We are prepared for this competition, but we also have to be rational in our way of participating in the auction.”
He added: “French football remains at the heart of our strategy and we hope to retain these rights.”

Comentariul este in limba engleza.
