Quote

The newcomer is one of at least 25 new models the firm is launching over the next five years - these include the new Eos convertible, a Golf-based SUV and even a Golf coupé, as revealed by Auto Express in Issue 886. With striking looks and a mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive layout, the new roadster will provide a cut-price rival to the Boxster, plus BMW's Z4 and Mercedes' SLK, as well as competing directly with the Honda S2000 and Vauxhall's forthcoming GT.

The mag's pictures, which are based on exclusive insider information, reveal the machine has changed little from the Concept R show car.

Porsche to Increase Stake in Volkswagen

     Text from The Associated Press:

FRANKFURT, Germany — Porsche AG said Friday it will purchase another 3.9 percent of Volkswagen AG, a move that would give it a blocking minority stake of 25.1 percent in Europe's biggest automaker.

The Stuttgart-based maker of luxury autos said it had filed a request for approval with Germany's Federal Cartel Office for the purchase. Holding a stake of more than 25 percent would put Porsche in a position to block corporate decisions by VW if it so desired.

Shares of Volkswagen rose by nearly 2.6 percent to euro54.28 ($68.29) in Frankfurt trading, whiles Porsche shares were up more than half a percent to euro752.37 ($946.63).

Porsche said it "anticipates that the Cartel Office will approve its plans without delay. Porsche would be able to implement the intended stock purchase as soon as approval is granted."

Porsche spent about euro3.5 billion ($4.4 billion) late last year to increase its stake in VW to 18.5 percent, making it that company's biggest single shareholder.

The move was aimed at protecting Volkswagen, a supplier for nearly a third of Porsche's production, from any hostile foreign takeover. Since then, Porsche's stake has grown to 21.2 percent.

Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI Heading to Pikes Peak

Three 2006 Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDIs will embark upon the demanding climb to the 14,100-foot Pikes Peak summit in the 84th running of the Race to the Clouds. On July 1, pro-drivers Mark Miller, Danny Sullivan and Ryan Arciero will set out to show that the Touareg’s precise German engineering and powerful V10 TDI engine can handle even the most challenging driving conditions.

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, or Race to the Clouds, is a 12.4-mile course with quick straights and 156 hairpin turns on terrain that alternates between pavement and gravel—mostly without guardrails. The Touaregs will run in the Luxury SUV division piloted by the professional drivers.

Off-road champion Mark Miller competed in the 2006 Dakar Rally as a factory Volkswagen Motorsports driver.  During his racing career, he has secured multiple first place finishes in the Baja series and competed at Pikes Peak in 2000. Danny Sullivan is one of the most highly acclaimed race car drivers in the world with significant performances in Formula One, Le Mans Sports Car and Indy Car leagues, as well as winning the 1985 Indy 500.  Ryan Arciero holds 40 career wins, including three Baja 1000 and multiple Baja 500 championships, a Nevada 2000 Trophy Truck championship and a USAC “Rookie of the Year” title.  He also competed in the 2005 Dakar Rally.
“The Touareg is well-equipped to handle the challenges of Pikes Peak,” said Miller.  “With its sophisticated engine, it is designed to perform under the most excruciating conditions – including the mixed surface and high altitude of the mountain.”

The Touareg V10 TDI is a high-performance, diesel version of Volkswagen’s popular luxury SUV. Its powerful five-liter, 10-cylinder engine boasts 310 horsepower at 3,750 revolutions per minute and offers impressive pulling power with 553 lbs-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm.

The three Touareg V10 TDIs will be the first SUVs to use ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) to Race to the Clouds.  This clean diesel fuel, provided by sponsor Shell Oil Products U.S., reduces emissions of sulfur compounds and allows for the use of advanced emission control systems. In another display of innovation, the Touareg is the first light duty vehicle in the U.S. to include a particulate filter that further reduces emissions. The 2006 Touareg’s diesel engine is compliant in all 50 states and consumes up to 30 percent less fuel than traditional gasoline engines.

“This is a vehicle with tremendous power and technology that I really enjoy driving,” said Danny Sullivan.  “I am looking forward to engaging its full strength and ability to climb Pikes Peak.

The Touareg with its 4XMotion all-wheel drive system provides superior traction control – a must-have on the challenging surfaces of Pikes Peak.  Standard equipment includes Anti-lock Brake System, Anti-slip regulation, Electronic Differential Lock, Engine Braking Assist, Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution, Electronic Stabilization Program with brake assist, Hill Descent Assist and Hill Climb Assist.

“I’m eager to get behind the wheel of the Touareg at Pikes Peak,” said Arciero. “The vehicle has a great sense of adventure that’s needed for this tough climb.  The Race to the Clouds is ideal to present the Touareg’s technical advancements.”

Volkswagen will race the Touareg at Pikes Peak with support from Shell Oil Products U.S., Red Bull, Nitto Tires, Oakley and NAVTEQ.

Volkswagen Develops Self-Driving Car

   Text from the Daily Mirror.
The Daily Mail has reported that German car giants Volkswagen [compare Volkswagen prices] has turned fantasy into reality unveiling a fully automatic car that can drive itself - at speeds of up to 150mph.

The remarkable vehicle is the VW Golf GTI ´53 plus 1´ - a codename which refers to the number 53 that Herbie, the famous VW Lovebug carried when racing in his Hollywood adventures.

Using electronic eyes using radar and laser sensors in the grille to ´read´ the road and send the details back to its computer brain. A sat-nav system can track it´s exact position and the car can then work out all the bends and twists it has to get through before setting off.

On the race circuit, the VW Golf GTi ´53 plus 1´ drove itself faster and more precisely than the VW engineers did, and accelerated independently up to 150mph.

To prove this is a real development, VW invited guests to a test track near their world headquarters in Wolfsburg in northern Germany and asked them to design for themselves a variety of different courses, using road cones. They then watched the car navigate around them - on its own.

Until now the fully self driving car has been the stuff of fantasy. Many people will remember watching the Herbie films and Knight Rider in awe, seeing the Love Bug and K.I.T, the cars that drove themelves, wondering if such a vehicle would ever exist.

Anything is possible - the commercialisation of the self driving car is not such an unlikely prospect as it once was and you can be sure that many of the elements which make up the engine will be finding their way into car showrooms within a few years - jut like sat nav and anti-lock brakes have done in recent years. So watch this space.

Nu, era o aluzie la Golf-ul "53+1" fara sofer. Noul slogan ar trebui sa fie "No more drivers wanted".

TSI Added to VW's Engine Technologies

In addition to TDI, direct injection turbo diesel, FSI, direction injection petrol, Volkswagen now has TSI, a direction injection petrol engine dual-charged with a supercharger and turbocharger.

The European CO2 emissions target for a manufacturer’s overall range of passenger cars by 2008 is an average 140g/km. Whilst the latest generation of direct injection diesel engines are well on their way to reaching these new levels, petrol engines, even the current direction injection types, are not.

Volkswagen says for them the new targets must be met but not at the expense of driving pleasure. They are working on the most effective way to reduce consumption and CO2 emissions by downsizing in capacity. Their new engines must still be compact, durable and suitable for mass production. But smaller engines are not renowned for giving good driving performance, something the customers insists upon otherwise they will not buy them.

The result is TSI that combines an FSI direct injection petrol engine with a supercharger and exhaust driven turbocharger. This technology has been tried before but not successfully as manufacturers could not make the change from supercharged power to turbocharged power seamless.

TSI uses a 1.4-litre FSI engine as its core, which is then dual-charged through a combination of an engine driven supercharger operating at five times crankshaft speed and an exhaust gas turbocharger, arranged in series.

The driving characteristics of the new TSI engine are improved over those of the current FSI unit. The belt-driven supercharger operates at lower engine speeds, with the turbocharger coming in as engine speed increases. To create a seamless progression from one source of boosted power to another, in the mid range at the changeover point the blown air from the supercharger is diverted into the turbocharger for a short period and then the turbocharger takes over completely. This ‘series’ process is continuous and a sealed for life clutch allows the supercharger to switch in and out automatically on demand.

Volkswagen says the result of this is excellent driveability and performance throughout the range with no turbo lag and high maximum torque. It combines the benefits of petrol and diesel engines. Petrol characteristics are low noise and vibration; diesels are good driveability, high torque from low engine speeds and fuel economy.

Key to the TSI’s success is that direct injection allows an abnormally high compression ratio of 10:1 to be used in conjunction with high maximum boost pressure of up to 2.5 bar. This enables the relatively small engine to use very high gearing to provide improved fuel efficiency for a petrol engine, particularly at motorway cruising speeds.  As an additional bonus, the TSI engine produces high power and torque across a rev range from 1,000 to 6,500 rpm.

The new TSI engine has a capacity of 1.4-litres and is available with the choice of two power outputs, either 140 or 170 PS. The 170 PS version has the same peak power as a conventional 2.3-litre petrol unit but with 20 per cent lower fuel consumption, returning 38.2 mpg on the combined cycle. It also produces maximum torque of 177 lbs ft (240 Nm) from 1,750 through to 4,500 rpm.

Depending on the specific model and power output, the 1.4 TSI engines return between 37.7 and 39.2mpg with CO2 emissions between 169 and 180 g/km.

The new 1.4-litre TSI engine replaces in some Volkswagen model the current 2.0-litre, 150 PS/148 lbs ft FSI engine.

All TSI engines drive through a manual six-speed gearbox. A DSG automatic option is also available with the 170 PS engine. This will be offered later in the year with the 140 PS unit.

TSI technology has already received international acclaim, having been named Best New Engine of 2006 in the International Engine of the Year Awards. It also won the 1-litre to 1.4-litre category.

Volkswagen’s Golf is one of the first models in the range to benefit from TSI technology.

It is available in Sport and GT trim with 140 and 170 PS respectively. TSI, 140 PS engines are also available in the Touran and Golf Plus. Volkswagen says the compact engine has been designed for eventual use in other model ranges such as the Polo, Passat and in the new Eos coupe/cabriolet ranges once supplies of the new unit become more widely available.

In the future it is likely TSI engines will be used in the other Volkswagen family brands, Audi, Seat and Skoda.

Speaking at the UK media launch of TSI technology this week, Dr Hermann Middendorf, Volkswagen’s head of Spark Ignition Engine Development said, "In developing our TSI petrol engine our targets were to produce an engine with high torque at low engine speeds, best in class fuel consumption, low fuel consumption at high cruising speeds and of course reliability. In addition we have been able to provide an engine with a very wide and flat torque band from 1,000 rpm right through to 6,500 rpm making the car very flexible and responsive to drive even in high gears."

TSI prices start at £15,995 for the Golf Sport 140 PS three-door model. The Golf GT 170 PS three-door model costs £18,095 with an added £500 for the five-door version. The Golf GT 170 PS with a DSG automated transmission costs £19,925.

As a price comparison, the outgoing Golf three-door with the 2.0-litre FSI engine was priced at £17,275 showing the new TSI engine has a price premium of £820. Volkswagen says there are other changes to the specification of the vehicle so a direct price comparison is not accurately possible.

The Golf Plus Sport 140 PS is priced at £17,215 and Touran 140 PS models start at £17,995.

Volkswagen UK says this year their sales prediction for all Golf models is 60,000 units with the new TSI 140PS and 170PS models each taking around 2 per cent of sales, approximately 2,400 units in total.

For Touran the UK sales this year will be around 11,000 units and the TSI 140PS models will also account for 2 per cent of sales, 220 units.

Se pare ca motorul 1,4 TSi cu puterea de 150 cai, va inlocui motorul 2.0 FSi 150 cai.
