Astronauts want plan to prevent cosmic collision

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (AP) -- Imagine last year's tsunami, last month's earthquake in Pakistan, and Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma all rolled into one -- and then some. If nations can't handle those calamities, what's going to happen when an asteroid collides with Earth?

In 30 years, there is a 1-in-5,500 chance that a smallish asteroid will land a bull's eye on our planet. At 360 yards wide, it could take out New York City and much of the surrounding area.

Fortunately, experts believe further observations of the asteroid, 99942 Apophis, will almost certainly rule out an impact in 2036. Nevertheless, it's precisely that kind of predictable and preventable threat -- and the thought of being ill-prepared for it -- that alarms the world's normally intrepid spacefarers who are calling for action.

They issued an open letter at the Association of Space Explorers' annual congress last month in Salt Lake City, making a rare, united push for strategies and spacecraft to prevent a cosmic pileup.

Two of the astronauts -- Apollo 9's Rusty Schweickart and shuttle and space station veteran Ed Lu -- have even helped establish a foundation to spotlight the issue.

"There are always natural disasters and it always seems as though the preparation is somewhat less than adequate. But we have had a series of quite substantial ones here in the last year," Schweickart said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Hollywood's depiction of cosmic collisions -- think "Armageddon" and "Deep Impact" -- has heightened public awareness, "but regrettably with the wrong solutions and overdramatization," Schweickart said.

"You don't want to send up Bruce Willis and others to save us. That's Hollywood silliness," he said, chuckling. Instead, technology is far enough along that an asteroid could be deflected before hitting Earth, he said.

For now, the astronauts are being cautious -- some say too cautious -- in their approach.

"A lot of the folks working in this area are really attuned to not being Chicken Little, saying, 'Hey, this is going to kill us, it's going to kill us,' " Lu said. "That's not what we're saying. We're saying that you need to start thinking about it ahead of time because afterward is way too late.

"The possible consequences are way worse than your run-of-the-mill natural disasters like earthquakes and tsunamis and hurricanes. As bad as they may be, this can dwarf them."

Astronauts know better than most just how small and fragile and vulnerable the planet is.

"When you go around it in an hour and a half, again and again and again and again, day after day, in some cases now, month after month after month, the Earth becomes a pretty small place," Schweickart said. "And then, of course ... most astronauts tend to be aware of things like asteroids and their impacts. I mean, we romped around the moon after spending years in preparation by looking at every impact crater and volcano here on the Earth."

It's time, the space explorers say, for NASA to step up to the plate.

The association wants NASA to expand its Spaceguard Survey, a program that discovers and tracks near-Earth objects -- asteroids and comets -- that are at least two-thirds of a mile across. So far, 807 of an estimated 1,100 of these big rocky asteroids have been discovered in the inner solar system along with 57 comets; California's Jet Propulsion Laboratory is plotting their future tracks.

An asteroid two-thirds of a mile wide, at impact, would be enough to easily take out a good-sized European country. By comparison, an asteroid or comet believed to be six to seven miles across wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago.

The space explorers want the many smaller, but still dangerous asteroids tracked as well. Altogether, 3,611 near-Earth asteroids of all sizes have been discovered, with an estimated 100,000 more capable of setting off a tsunami the size of the one that shook the Indian Ocean last December.

Scientists are carefully watching Apophis, which will whiz by Earth in 2029, passing within an unnerving 18,640 miles. That's a few thousand miles closer than many communications satellites and 220,000 miles closer than the moon. In 2036, the concern is that it will move in even closer, leading to the 1-in-5,500 chance it will strike.

For a few hundred million dollars, the astronauts say, NASA could launch a scouting mission to Apophis in the next decade or two to place a radio transponder on the surface and thereby plot its course. But Donald Yeomans, manager of NASA's near-Earth object program, contends that mostly likely, radar and telescope observations will ultimately rule out any risk of impact.

Schweickart agrees that based on the current odds, a deflection mission for Apophis would be a waste of money. "But the question is, do I agree with it when it's 1-in-100, when it's 1-in-50, if it's 1-in-20. That is a policy question. At what probability do you begin to spend hundreds of millions or billions of dollars in order to do something?"

That's not the only sticky policy question.

Are some places on the planet more dispensable than others? The point of impact, for instance, could be inadvertently shifted from one part of the world to another by an intervening spacecraft, jeopardizing one country instead of another. Who's liable if an asteroid-deflecting mission goes awry? Indeed, who decides if such a mission is needed and how far in advance should that decision be made?

Nuclear electric propulsion would be ideal for quickly getting spacecraft to potential killer asteroids and nudging them out of Earth's way, the astronauts say. But the technology for such an "asteroid tugboat" is on hold, a recent casualty of budget cuts.

Rep. John Culberson, R-Texas, is sympathetic to the astronauts' concerns and has asked NASA to see what might be needed to protect Earth from asteroid impacts.

Nuclear-powered spacecraft could either land on the asteroid and apply a small but continuous force over months in order to alter its Earth-smashing course, or hover above the asteroid and use its gravity to push it aside. Forget about any sensational last-minute asteroid crackups, "Armageddon" style; the pieces could wind up on a collision course with Earth.

Schweickart and Lu's B612 Foundation -- named after the home asteroid of the Earth-visiting prince in Antoine de Saint-Exupery's "Le Petit Prince" -- is pushing for an orbit-altering demonstration by 2015 on a harmless, way-out-of-the-way asteroid.

The European Space Agency also is proposing a practice mission called Don Quixote to alter an asteroid's course, but it's yet to be formally approved. NASA's Deep Impact spacecraft smashed into a comet for scientific reasons in July; by design, it barely altered the comet's path.

"We're sitting in a shooting gallery, with hundreds of thousands of these things whizzing around in the inner solar system. So it's just a matter of time," said Schweickart, board chairman of the B612 Foundation.

Fortunately, the technology to protect us is ready for the task, he said, and that's "the beauty of it."

Asteroid MN4 otherwise known as Apophis has been designated the most dangerous heavenly body of the century

Apophis was discovered by Steve Chesley at NASA in June 2004. He stirred up a lot a buzz among his colleagues by saying that the thing is definitely going to ram into Earth. The colleagues rushed to telescopes and checked the photographs of the celestial sky. They found the asteroid on a photograph taken back in March.

The diameter of MN4 was initially measured at 500 meters. Researchers reduced the diameter to 320 meters after conducting a series of additional calculations. The asteroid rotates once in every 323 days, it crosses Earth's orbit twice a year. There is a real threat of collision, but it is not so deadly as previously thought. The asteroid will not be smashing our planet on April 13th, 2029. But it is expected to cross the sky in a really close vicinity to Earth. It might as well destroy a communications satellite.

Things may turn for the worse after the near-miss experience. It is not yet clear what will happen after the dangerous rendezvous. Some astronomers believe the earth's gravitation is capable of diverting the flight path of the asteroid. What direction will it take? Specialists are still busy trying to guesswork the year of a potential disaster: 2035, 2036 or 2037. They release scary estimates saying that the whole Northern Hemisphere may be under threat. The end of the world is out of question though densely populated areas would sustain heavy casualties. An area of 40 square kilometers would lay waste.

What should be done to protect our planet? Specialists consider two options at the moment. One involves demolition of the asteroid, the other one is to push it aside. Pushing the monster aside is less dangerous than an explosion producing thousands of fragments with unpredictable flight patterns. Where will those fragments fly to?

NASA astronauts Edward Lu and Stanley Love recently came up with an idea of pushing it aside by using a heavy spaceship. The ship should be heavy enough, from 20 tons to 30 tons. It would spin around Apophis. The asteroid's trajectory would be deflected by the ship's gravitational effects.

In the meantime, scientists are going to take a closer look at the dangerous heavenly bodies. European Space Agency is planning to launch a spacecraft which expected to land on asteroids to collect necessary data and images. Astronomers will be able to see the space rocks coming closer to Earth.

NASA has outlined what it could do, and in what time frame, in case a quarter-mile-wide asteroid named Apophis is on a course to slam into Earth in the year 2036. The timetable was released by the B612 Foundation, a group that is pressing NASA and other government agencies to do more to head off threats from near-Earth objects.

The plan runs like this: Eight years from now, if there's still a chance of a collision in 2036, NASA would start drawing up plans to put a probe on the space rock or in orbit around it in 2019. Measurements sent back from the probe would characterize Apophis' course to an accuracy of mere yards (meters) by the year 2020.

If those readings still could not rule out a strike in 2036, NASA would try to deflect the asteroid into a non-threatening course in the 2024-2028 time frame by firing an impactor at it — using this year's Deep Impact comet-blasting probe as a model. Experts would start planning for the "Son of Deep Impact" mission even before they knew whether or not it was needed.

The plan is described in a letter attributed to Mary Cleave, NASA's associate administrator for the science mission directorate, as well as a scientific paper by Steve Chesley, an asteroid specialist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The letter was addressed to the B612 Foundation, and B612 made the letter and the paper public on Friday evening.

Although Cleave declined to comment on the plan in an e-mail exchange with MSNBC.com on Sunday, NASA confirmed on Monday that the letter distributed by the B612 Foundation was authentic. The outlines of the plan match reports that emerged from an August scientific conference in Brazil, where Chesley presented his paper.

‘Thorough and thoughtful’ analysis
The B612 Foundation said it was grateful for NASA's "thorough and thoughtful" analysis, which came in response to the foundation's call for a near-term mission to the asteroid, back in June. Former astronaut Rusty Schweickart, the chairman of the California-based foundation's board, said the plan would pose challenges for NASA officials.

"It's certainly a tight schedule," he told MSNBC.com Sunday, "but on the other hand, they're the experts."

Schweickart also noted that Apophis was an unusual case among potentially threatening asteroids, in that it would take a relatively small deflection to eliminate the possibility of a catastrophic collision. "In the typical case, that isn't going to do the job," he said.

Flurry of concern
Apophis, also known as 2004 MN4, stirred up a flurry of concern last December when the risk of collision was raised temporarily to as high as 1 out of 40 for the year 2029. With an estimated diameter of 1,300 feet (400 meters), the asteroid could destroy a city if it hit the wrong place on land, or raise a deadly tsunami if it plunged into the ocean.

Fortunately, more precise plotting ruled out a collision in 2029. However, Apophis will still make an extremely close pass — missing Earth by mere tens of thousands of miles. At that distance, Earth's gravitational pull could perturb Apophis' orbit enough to put it on a track to hit during another pass in 2036. Experts say that could happen if, during the 2029 close encounter, the asteroid passes through an outer-space "keyhole" that measures about 2,000 feet (600 meters) across.

In statistical terms, the risk of an impact is now set at 1 in 5,560, based on the uncertainties surrounding Apophis' orbit.

Mitingurile săptămânale organizate de Şcoala de yoga MISA au devenit supărătoare. "Demisia" lui Ilie Botoş cerută insistent „nu dă bine”. De aceea au început să se facă o serie de presiuni asupra yoghinilor MISA prezenţi la miting pentru a se obţine renunţarea la proteste. La mitingul care a avut loc astăzi, 7 decembrie, a avut loc un atentat şi autorizaţia de desfăşurare a fost acordată în ultima clipă.

Peste o sută de yoghini s-au adunat din nou în faţa Ministerului Public, în Piaţa Constituţiei, pentru a cere demisia procurorului general al României, Ilie Botoş. În timpul mitingului, un bărbat înalt, bine îmbrăcat, a încercat să incendieze generatorul de curent care alimenta boxele montate în faţa Parchetului, unde a avut loc protestul. Acesta a vrut să arunce o ţigară aprinsă peste generatorul care funcţionează cu benzină. Unul dintre yoghini, care ieşise din mulţime să vorbească la telefon, l-a surprins pe acesta. De ciudă ca nu şi-a atins ţelul, bărbatul a smuls cablul microfonului din generator şi apoi a luat-o la fugă. Doi dintre yoghini l-au urmărit. Bărbatul a trecut strada, înspre Casa Poporului. Răzvan Haţeg, unul dintre participanţii la miting, care îl urmărea şi-a fluturat mâna prin aer, spunându-i acestuia „Nu scapi!”. Gestul a fost interpretat ca o ameninţare cu o armă de foc. De teamă să nu fie împuşcat, bărbatul a fugit înspre poliţiştii care păzeau una dintre intrările Casei Poporului. Răzvan Haţeg l-a ajuns şi a băgat mâna la piept strigând „Stai!”. Bărbatul a înlemnit, fiind convins că se va trezi cu un pistol în faţă. În schimb, Răzvan a scos un stilou, cerându-i bărbatului buletinul. Numele acestuia este Mihai Marius Covalciuc. După ce a fost prins, a afirmat că este de la SRI, sperând ca astfel să scape liber. Nu a avut mari şanse. A fost imobilizat, iar jandarmii prezenţi la miting i-au dat o amendă de zece milioane de lei. Oricum, împotriva sa s-a depus deja o plângere penală. Între timp, mitingul a continuat nestingherit, iar textele s-au citit la portavoce, până s-a reparat defecţiunea.

Tot spectacolul a avut loc sub privirile a zeci de ziarişti aflaţi în faţa Parchetului General, care aşteptau sosirea la audieri a fostul ministru de Finanţe PSD, Florin Georgescu. Acesta este martor în dosarul Rompetrol şi a fost audiat de procurorii de la Direcţia de Investigare a Infracţiunilor de Criminalitate Organizată şi Terorism. Florin Georgescu a fost ministru de Finanţe în perioada 1992-1996 şi fost vicepreşedinte al PSD, iar în prezent este prim-viceguvernator al Băncii Naţionale a României.

O altă încercare de a îi intimida pe protestatari este acordarea autorizaţiei de desfăşurare a mitingului cu doar zece minute înainte de ora stabilită pentru începere. Aceasta este cea de-a două săptămână în care autorizaţia este acordată pe ultima sută de metri. Dincolo de motivele oficiale, angajaţii Primăriei Bucureşti recunosc că aşa „poate renunţă yoghinii aştia”.

Astăzi a avut loc cel de-al 41-lea miting de protest organizat de Şcoala românească de yoga MISA în anul 2005. Aceasta este cea de-a unsprăzecea săptămână consecutivă în care yoghinii MISA cer prin proteste demisia lui Ilie Botoş şi pedepsirea procurorilor şi magistraţilor vinovaţi de abuzurile realizate în timpul percheziţiilor din 18 martie 2004. Protestele vor continua până când se va face dreptate.

Nu! Exista coeziune si intelegere intre ungurii de rand si romanii de rand (dat fiind SI numarul mare de adepti MISA de etnie maghiara). Politicile de sciziune ale "inteleptilor" conducatori secui (luate in vizor si de MISA al carui aparat de propaganda functioneaza ca un ceas elvetian) penetreaza muult mai lent la aceste paturi.

Dupa parerea mea sa stai in pielea goala in fata unei multimi mi se pare un lucru stupid.
Da am vazut ce fel de meditatii faceau yoghini prin flimele alea xxx, maritul peste se folosea de "sarmanele" fete sa faca filme xxx, eu cred ca adunatura aia de persoane care beau urina dupa cate am auzit sunt sariti cu totii.

Serios acum, ma mir cat de tare a prins povestea aia cu 2012.
